EA2010 Working Group

Overview:
The EA2010 Working Group - a group of "street-smart" enterprise architecture practitioners - has been actively discussing the domains, services, practices and skills required for a thriving, business relevant enterprise architecture practice in the 2010s.

The major domains we identified are: technology architecture; business architecture; projects alignment; delivery; operations and measurement; and governance and enterprise architecture management.

A critical finding of the group discussion is the emphasis of technology concerns at the expense of business understanding, and ultimately, true business enablement, in most enterprise architecture practices today. Successful enterprise architecture practices in the 2010s must give equal emphasis to technology and business concerns.

In pursuit of this re-balancing, in 2009 the EA2010 team pursued a line of discussion and research on the purpose, practices and realities of expanding, or in some cases starting, business architecture practices. This work stream culminated in the publication of an EA2010 Business Architecture whitepaper.

Starting in June 2010, EA2010 will pursue a new line of discussions and research focusing on the business aspects of successful enterprise architecture practices. Items for discussion include:

  • Establishing and sustaining credibility with business and IT constituents
  • Business Outcome rather than Business Model alignment
  • Injecting financial measurement and decision-making acumen into EA
  • Catalyzing a business architecture practice

All members of the BPM/SOA Community of Practice are welcome to participate in the EA2010 Working Group. The re-start call is Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 1:00 PM ET.

Subsequent calls are scheduled for 1:00PM eastern time on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.

Since our restart on June 23, 2010, we've had great conversations on the role, value and core practices of enterprise architecture in respect to business-IT synergy, business planning, optimization and innovation.

On our August 11, 2010 call, we'd like to discuss the next deliverable for the EA2010 team. Our most recent deliverable, a discussion-oriented paper on Business Architecture, is available here: http://www.soa-consortium.org/EA2010.htm

Given the positive response to our first paper, we propose continuing with a series of Enterprise Architecture relevant discussion-oriented whitepapers. Based on the energy and direction of our conversation to date, we have identified the discussion topics for the first two papers.

The first paper, and topic to be explored, is "Conveying the Business Value of Enterprise Architecture to Business and IT constituents". This paper should be a collection of practices, tips, artifacts and anecdotes of things that worked, and didn't work, in talking EA value and contribution, and achieving buy-in (investment).

The second paper, and topic to be explored, is "Evolving Enterprise Architecture from Optimization to Innovation".

On our next call, tomorrow at 1:00PM ET, we will seek input on the above and outline a plan of attack.
